Soon I will embark on a monthlong trip to Romania and Poland with a quick stopover in Amsterdam. When I started looking into flights from Faro, Portugal to Bucharest, Romania; I discovered that the most convenient flights were through Amsterdam. This was good for me in a couple of ways. First, I have very good Dutch friends that live in Amsterdam and seeing them is always a pleasure. I’ve known them since 1989 and I consider them lifelong friends. Second, the once in a lifetime Vermeer exhibit was also taking place during my visit.
I booked my Vermeer tickets in March after a couple of tries. The Rijks server went down a few times due to overwhelming demand but I was able to get my ticket for the 29th of May. The exhibit started on the 10th of February and is done on the 4th of June. I’m very much looking forward to it. I’ve seen several Vermeers around the world. There are approximately 35 legitimate Vermeers. I’ve seen about 17 of them in New York, Boston, London, Paris, Washington DC and in Amsterdam. But now for the first time, they will, almost all, be in the same place. I will also make a side trip to The Hague to see the Girl with the Pearl Earring as she was returned to The Mauritshuis at the end of April. I’m very excited but at the same time I’m worried how crowded it might be and if I will have time to reflect and admire each of the paintings? I’ll let you know.
